The History
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the professional league for basketball players. The league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946 from the Basketball Association of America (BAA).The league adopted the name National Basketball Association in 1949 after merging with the rival National Basketball League (NBL).
Basketball Association of America (BAA)
The BAA was composed of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northeaster and Midwestern Unitued States and Canada. It was on November 1, 1946, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the Toronto Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers at at Maple Leaf Gardens, which the NBA now regards as the first game played in the league’s history.
National Basketball League (NBL)
The NBL begun with thirteen independent teams in 1937, which then began as the Midwest Basketball Conference in 1935 but changed its name in 1937 to attract a larger audience. The creation of the NBL was started by three corporations: General Electric, Firestone and Goodyear. It was primarily made of Great Lakes area small market and corporate teams. The franchise then merged with the BAA in 1949 resulting in the renaming to National Basketball Association
